Description

The Post-Graduate Programme in Critical Care Nursing is designed to prepare professionals to assess, address, and evaluate the care needs of patients in high-intensity and complex clinical settings. The programme emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration and continuous care outcome evaluation.

Objectives

The course focuses on developing key competencies to:

  • Manage care pathways and ensure continuity of care through a transdisciplinary approach.
  • Utilize information systems to streamline and support care pathways.
  • Implement clinical guidelines for the care of critically ill patients.
  • Operate advanced technologies for monitoring and supporting vital functions.
  • Analyze monitoring data and handle complex clinical-care scenarios.
  • Administer invasive and non-invasive ventilation techniques.
  • Plan and execute protected patient transports within and beyond hospital settings.
  • Provide health and therapeutic education to patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Address clinical, relational, and organizational challenges in organ donation processes.
  • Identify and mitigate risks in intensive care environments.
  • Facilitate end-of-life communication and human relations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Conduct nursing research activities to enhance evidence-based practices.
  • Develop quality improvement initiatives using narrative practices.
  • Offer professional consultancy services to enhance critical care delivery.

Teaching approach

The programme employs a thematic and interactive approach to learning, combining:

  • Delivering theoretical lessons to establish foundational knowledge.
  • Engaging in practical workshops for hands-on experience.
  • Participating in seminars to explore advanced topics and current trends.
  • Collaborating in group activities to strengthen teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Internships are conducted in research institutions, universities, and IRCCS (Scientific Institutes for Research, Hospitalisation, and Healthcare). Participants will actively engage in research projects under the guidance of experienced researchers.

The final examination involves developing a research project (Project Work) on topics relevant to the programme. The research will culminate in the writing and defence of a thesis, supported by a research-experienced tutor.

Attendance mode

Lessons are delivered synchronously online, with occasional in-person meetings that can also be attended remotely.

The theoretical part of the Master’s course may therefore be attended exclusively online, with the exception of the ultrasound laboratory and any other clinical-practical events, participation in which remains optional.

75% attendance of online educational activities and 100% completion of internship hours are mandatory.

Classes are held on Thursdays and Fridays every other week, excluding summer and Christmas breaks.

2. The theoretical part of the master’s course can therefore also be attended exclusively online (except for the BLSD and ACLS courses, Ultrasound Laboratory and electives). The online mode used provides for distance lectures by teachers connected live (synchronous lectures) and the possibility for connected students to interact. Online lectures will still be recorded even if the only way to achieve attendance is to be present at the synchronous lectures.
