Description

The Post-Graduate Programme in Qualitative Research for Healthcare Professionals is designed to provide advanced training in qualitative research methodologies. The programme equips healthcare professionals with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to conduct high-quality research aimed at enhancing care quality, understanding patient experiences, and personalizing care pathways.

The course focuses on developing the following key skills:

  • Master qualitative research methodologies, including interviews, focus groups, and participant observation, tailored to healthcare contexts.
  • Analyse and interpret complex qualitative data using specialized software and tools for data processing and coding.
  • Design qualitative research studies, including formulating research questions, defining sample populations, and selecting appropriate data collection techniques.
  • Integrate qualitative research findings into clinical and management practices to enhance care quality and patient satisfaction.
  • Develop critical and reflective thinking about methodological choices and the ethical considerations specific to qualitative research in healthcare.
  • Present and disseminate qualitative research outcomes effectively through scientific articles, professional presentations, and stakeholder reports.
  • Collaborate within interprofessional teams, fostering integration and teamwork in the design and execution of qualitative research.

Teaching approach

The Post-Graduate Programme in Qualitative Research for Healthcare Professionals utilizes a thematic and interactive teaching methodology, combining theoretical lessons, workshops, seminars, and group work. This approach ensures that participants gain both a foundational understanding and practical experience in qualitative research methodologies.

The curriculum is designed to address key areas in research and healthcare practice:

  1. Introduction to Research: origins of research in healthcare professions; distinction between inductive and deductive approaches; the evolving role of healthcare professionals in research.
  2. Literature Review: understanding evidence-based practice and its application in healthcare research; formulating research questions using methods like PICO, PICOS, and SPIDER; navigating scientific databases and constructing effective search strings; developing the PRISMA framework and using tools for critical evaluation of scientific articles.
  3. Ethics, Deontology, and Legislation: exploring ethical considerations in research; understanding legislation governing healthcare research; roles and responsibilities of Ethical Committees.
  4. Overview of Quantitative Approaches: introduction to experimental, quasi-experimental, and non-experimental designs; designing and using questionnaires and surveys for data collection.
  5. Qualitative Approaches: understanding research designs like phenomenological, ethnographic, and Grounded Theory approaches; techniques for narrative analysis and case studies; tools for data collection, including participant observation, focus groups, and semi-structured and in-depth interviews; analysis and interpretation of qualitative data; strategies for disseminating qualitative research findings.
  6. Overview of Mixed Methods: introduction to integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies for comprehensive research.
  7. Systematic Reviews of Qualitative Studies (Meta-Synthesis): understanding and conducting meta-synthesis for qualitative research studies.

Internships are conducted in research institutions, universities, and IRCCS (Scientific Institutes for Research, Hospitalisation, and Healthcare). Participants will actively engage in research projects under the guidance of experienced researchers.

The final examination involves developing a research project (Project Work) on topics relevant to the programme. The research will culminate in the writing and defence of a thesis, supported by a research-experienced tutor.
